Transition from Primary School

Gymnasium or ISS — what comes after primary school?

What happens at the end of year 4 (or 6)?

In Berlin, Grundschule runs for 6 years (years 1 to 6), which is different from most other German states where it is 4 years. At the end of year 6, students receive a school recommendation for either Gymnasium or ISS (Integrierte Sekundarschule).

How is the recommendation decided?

The recommendation is based on the child's overall performance in year 5 and 6, particularly in German and Maths. Teachers issue a formal recommendation. In Berlin, the recommendation is not legally binding. Families can choose Gymnasium even if the recommendation was for ISS, as long as the child meets the grade requirements.

What grades do you need for Gymnasium?

In Berlin, the general guideline is an average of 2.2 or better across German, Maths, and the first foreign language (usually English) at the end of year 6. The exact threshold can vary slightly by school and year. Check the current requirements with your school.

What is the difference between Gymnasium and ISS?

Gymnasium leads to the Abitur after 6 years (year 7 to 12, G8 in Berlin). ISS leads to either the mittlere Schulabschluss (MSA) at the end of year 10 or, if the student continues, the Abitur at the end of year 13. Both paths can lead to university. ISS is not a lesser option, just a different pace.

Is there an entrance exam?

Most state Gymnasien in Berlin do not have entrance exams. A small number of schools with specialized profiles (e.g. music, sport, languages) may have auditions or tests. Private schools typically run their own selection process.

What if my child changes their mind later?

Switching between school types is possible at defined transition points. A student who starts at ISS and performs strongly can still move to Gymnasium at the end of year 7, for example. Speak to the school about the process.
